John Edward Smith, 80, entered into rest on Sunday, May 16, 2010.
Mr. Smith was born on October 5, 1929, in Dunham, Kentucky. With pride and honor, he served his country in the United States Army and participated in the Vietnam and Korean Conflicts, where he earned a Bronze Merit Service Medal. After retiring from his military career, he worked in civil service as a Communication Specialist for Office of Personnel Management in Macon before retirement. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Masonic Houston Lodge #35 in Perry, where he served as Past Master in 1991. He also served as Past Master of the 12th Masonic District in 1993. He was the 12th District Education Director for the Grand Lodge of Georgia and a Shriner of Al Sihah Temple and Perry Lodge #35, where he served as president in 1993.
He was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-two years, Martha Rose Mann Smith, and parents, Clarence Ernest Smith and Helen Davis Smith. His memory will forever be treasured by his son, Dwayne Edward (Vicki) Smith; special nieces, Jill Johnson, Jenkins, Kentucky, and Kathy Ramey, Jacksonville, Florida; nephew, Keith Sunk, Jacksonville; and many other family members and close friends.
Inurnment will take place on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Andersonville National Cemetery in Andersonville. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations may be made to Heartland Hospice, 115 Arkwright Landing, Macon GA 31210, or American Cancer Society, 804 Cherry Street, Suite A, Macon GA 31201.
