John Frank Pope, 83, died Monday, December 24 at the Houston Medical Center. Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 27 at First Baptist Church of Warner Robins with interment following in Magnolia Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at McCullough Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1544 Warner Robins, GA 31099.
Lt. Col. Pope, a native of Birmingham, AL, was a graduate of Auburn University, where he received a Mechanical Engineering degree and he lettered in Diving.
He retired Lt. Colonel from the U.S. Air Force, having served in WWII and the North Africa War. He flew 205 missions, was a member of the 2nd Fighter Squadron, American Beagal Squadron, and the Daedallions at Tyndall AFB. As a Captain, John F. Pope, II was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and Twelve Oak Leaf Clusters. Captain Pope, Class 42-B, received his training at Randolph Field and Foster Field. He engaged in more than 120 sorties, shot down six enemy planes, and has served in Ireland, Scotland, England, Gibraltar, Algiers, Tunisia, French Morocco and New Foundland. He was retired Civil Service and had worked in Quality Control at Robins AFB.
Lt. Col. Pope was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a Shriner Al Sihah Society member and a member of the Legion of Honor. He was also a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Unit. Lt. Col. Pope was a member of First Baptist Church of Warner Robins, where he was a member of the Ready Builders Sunday School Class as well as the Keenagers Club. His parents, Leon and Mary Pope, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Robbie Seymour Pope; daughter, Wynanne Hilliard of Warner Robins; son, Ernest Albert Pope of Warner Robins and son, John F. Pope III of Dexter, GA; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
