John L. West, 58, passed away on September 9, 2004 at Houston Medical Center. He was predeeded in death by his parents Jack and Gene West. Services will be held at 7:00pm on Monday, September 13, at McCullough Funeral Home.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA and raised in Alliance, OH, Mr. West was a loving husband to Nancy and father to Vicki and Peter. He was the eldest brother of Sally West of Massilon, OH, Donel West of Arcadia, FL, Charles West of Eugene, OR, and Joseph West of Phoenix, AZ.
His occupations and achievements were founded upon service to others. As an officer in the U.S. Army, he served in Field Artillery, Intelligence, the Honor Guard, and earned the National Defense Medal. After an honorable discharge, he earned BS Degrees in both Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, as well as a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling. He spent 10 years as a mathematics instructor and Athletic Director while coaching track and field, cross-country and football in Fairfield, Ohio.
He moved with his family to Warner Robins, where he worked at Robins Air Force Base as a software engineer for eighteen years. While in Houston County, John served as a Scout Master for Troop 566 where he guided many young men to the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a volunteer track and field coach at Houston County High and coordinated several community projects such as the Pearl Stephens Cross-Country course and the Outdoor Classroom at Northside Elementary.
For the past several years, Mr. West was an active member of the United States Association of Track and Field. A nationally certified official, John loved volunteering at meets such the Olympic Trials in Sacremento and the World Masters in Puerto Rico. As an avid outdoorsman, John and his family enjoyed fishing and camping all over Canada, Alaska, and the continental US. A great influence on all those he encountered, John will be forever respected and dearly missed.
