John Malachi “J.M.” Byrd, 80, a beloved Middle Georgia native and proud veteran, peacefully passed away at the Dodge County Hospital on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
Born in Macon, Georgia, J.M., also known as "J.B." was the son of the late James Morgan Byrd and Gladys Bell Bennett. After graduating from high school, J.M. enlisted in the United States Army, where he served with the 82nd Airborne. Following his military service, J.M. became a talented flooring specialist and played a fundamental role in the construction of the Macon Mall's flooring.
In his leisure time, J.M. enjoyed the outdoors, particularly fishing and hunting. J.M. was a founding member of Procasters Bass Club in Macon. He also had a passion for cooking, and especially excelled in grilling delicious meals.
Above all, J.M. loved the Lord, Jesus Christ, and was a devoted member and Deacon of New Elam Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, J.M. was preceded by his wife, Cynthia Ann Leverett Byrd; son, John Byrd, Jr.; and granddaughter, Haley D. Byrd.
J.B.’s son, Dewayne Byrd; grandson, Dylan Byrd; nieces, Haroldene Davis, and Teresa Davis; nephew, Robbie Daniels; and brother-in-law, William “Billy” Burke, are left to cherish J.M.’s memory.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 13, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, John Malachi “J.M.” Byrd will be laid to rest next to his wife in the Leverett Family Cemetery.
