Joseph “Jeff” Walker, Jr., born on February 3, 1928 in Telfair County, passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on the evening of Tuesday, September 13, 2022. He was at home surrounded by family and the memories of 94 years well-lived.
The son of the late Joseph F. Walker, Sr. and Sadie Silvers Walker, Jeff worked many different jobs over the years before retiring as a mechanic with J.W. Meadors. He liked to keep busy even in his retirement and enjoyed working on lawn mowers to pass the time. An accomplished musician and guitarist, Jeff spent a great deal of time playing and listening to music. He was inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001 for his innate ability to strum beautiful music. Jeff even invented the famous local dance called the “Elko Shuffle.” You could also find him watching the trains that passed by his house. When he wasn’t fixing mowers, playing music, admiring trains, he loved worshiping and fellowshipping as a member at Elko Baptist Church. Jeff was no doubt a people lover and there was no such thing as a stranger, only a friend he hadn’t spoken to yet. Being around family and friends was what made him the happiest.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Ryan.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of 72 years, Robbie L. Walker of Elko; children, Joyce Griffin (Gene) of Bonaire and Robert “Bobby” Walker (Ann) of Hawkinsville; grandchildren, Tammy, Joseph, Johnny and Shane; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation with Jeff’s family will be held on Friday, September 16, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2022, at Elko Baptist Church with Reverend Wayne Holcomb officiating. Jeff will be laid to rest in Elko Cemetery following the service on Saturday.
