CMSgt Joseph R. Smith, USAF (Ret.), 79, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 3, at 11:00am in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home, with interment following in Andersonville National Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7:00 until 9:00pm at McCullough Funeral Home.
CMSgt Smith, a native of Schuylkill Haven, PA, was a 26-year veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a POW in Germany during WWII, and he also served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked at Continental Can for eleven years. He was a Mason and an avid golfer. His parents, Charles Russell and Edna Mae Smith, and granddaughter, Laura Ann Smith Crook, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Louise Smith, Warner Robins; son, Gerald Russell Smith, Texas; sister, Helen Smith Brinich, and brother, Harold Charles Smith, both of Pennsylvania; brother, Leonard Smith, Virginia; grandchildren, Nancy Lee Smith Gust, Arizona, and Robert Russell Smith, Texas; great grandchildren, Durum Gust, Arizona, and Ivy Elizabeth Crook, Tennessee; cousins, Connie Ritchie Barber, Bonaire, and Mildred Smith Ritchie, Iron City, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
