Josephine Mitchell Simpson, 97, returned home to her Lord and Savior on Monday, May 27, 2024.
Josephine was born on September 14, 1926, in Worth County, Georgia to the late Walter and Nancy Mitchell. She grew up in a share cropping family who moved all over southern Georgia. The family relocated to Warner Robins from Albany in 1944 after marrying her husband, Emory. In her professional life, Josephine was a switchboard operator for Bellsouth Telephone Company until the birth of her third child, at which point she became a full-time homemaker. Faith was an integral part of Josephine’s identity, and her church families were part of her journey. She started as a member of Second Baptist Church until there grew a need for another church in town; Second Baptist created Green Acres Baptist Church from members of their congregation, with the Simpson family heralding as one of the original members until it became established. From there, the family returned to Second Baptist for a time until the church moved and then joined Friendship Baptist Church. Josephine was a Sunday School teacher throughout her church life and a part of the Women’s Missionary Union. She enjoyed time spent witnessing, reading her Bible, and visiting with others and telling them about Jesus. In her free time, she could be found doing crossword puzzles or playing scrabble. Her sweet countenance will be deeply missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
In addition to her parents, Josephine was preceded in death by her first husband, Emory Ellis Simpson, her second husband, Stanley Box, and daughter, Donna Simpson Wood.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her children, Dane Alan Simpson (Brenda) of Kathleen, Mark Anthony Simpson of Powder Springs, and Lisa Grace McGuire (Eugene) of Fort Valley; along with seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Friday, May 31, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Josephine will be laid to rest next to her husband, Emory at Magnolia Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Friendship Baptist Church Building Fund at 1322 Feagin Mill Road, Warner Robins, GA 31088.
