Joyce Adele Sturdivant, 85, entered into rest on Sunday, October 15, 2023.
Joyce was born on July 6, 1938, in Georgetown, Delaware, to the late Edward and Priscilla Lecates. She grew up in Woodland Beach, Delaware, where she graduated from high school and later earned her nursing degree. From there, she spent 20 years as a nurse on Columbus Air Force Base. The family then relocated to Warner Robins, Georgia. After the passing of her husband in 1989, Joyce realized an interest in the funeral business and began working at McCullough Funeral Home. Little did anyone know this would be the start of more than 30 years of service, not only to the company, but also to the community. Joyce, aptly nicknamed “ReJoyce” by a coworker, became an integral and beloved member of the McCullough family and ultimately found she enjoyed working visitations most of all. Hers was a face that people came to expect when they arrived to call on family and friends after a loss. If she wasn’t working, she was asked after; however, for decades it was a rare evening when she couldn’t be found at the front door welcoming people with her unmistakable accent, a warm greeting, and often a big hug. She had a unique way of making people feel at home and took great pride in the work of comforting others as well as in her longevity in the position. It is clear in both her early and later work that she was a born caregiver, but this also held true in her personal life with family, friends, and co-workers. She was generous in many ways and loved showing kindness through the countless thoughtful gestures that let people know she was thinking of them. She was also a long-time faithful member of Central Baptist Church where she was part of the Pete Joyner Sunday School Class. Simply put, Joyce was a one-of-a-kind lady, beloved by countless people, and those who crossed paths with her are certainly better off for having known her.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, James Sturdivant and her children, Victor Slaw, Jimmy Sturdivant, and Randy Sturdivant.
Left to treasure her memory and carry on the special legacy she leaves behind are her children, Hope Trauth (Philip), Nadine Sweeney (Richard), and Scott Sturdivant (Sandy); along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
At her request, the services for Joyce will be private.
