Lenora Grace Newton Hodges Penn, 85, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2005. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 18, at Marshallville United Methodist Church, Marshallville, Georgia with graveside services following at 3:30 p.m. in Floral Memory Gardens, Albany, Georgia. The family will receive friends at 201 E. Main Street, Marshallville, Georgia, Sunday, from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m., at the Rigsby Home. Donations may be made to The Good Samaritan Benevolence Fund, 2001 S. Lee Street, Americus, Georgia 31709.
Mrs. Penn was born September 13, 1919, in Dothan, Alabama to the late C. Newton and Shoffie Riley Newton Pledger. She received Early Childhood Education Certificates from both Florida State University and the University of Georgia. Mrs. Penn was a member of Marshallville United Methodist Church and a former member of the Porterfield Memorial Methodist Church in Albany, where she was Co-Founder and Director of the Kindergarten for 25 years. She was a member of the Georgia Pre-School Association, the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union and the Albany Women’s Club. Mrs. Penn was involved in various Youth Ministries, both in the church and in the community. She also served as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. In addition to her parents, her husbands, Raymond D. Hodges, Sr. and William Richard Penn preceded her in death.
Survivors include, children, Carol Lenora Hodges Rigsby (Jud), Marshallville, GA; Raymond Dee Hodges (Terrie), Bradenton, FL; Thomas A. Hodges, Atlanta, GA; and the children of William Penn, Richard Penn (Edith), KY; Susan Turlington (Dale), Gainesville, FL; and Andy Penn (Mary), FL; sister, Sara Nell Draughon, AL; brother, Rev. Douglas Newton, AL; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and many close lifelong friends.
