Lewis E. Hughes, Sr.

Surrounded by his family, First Sgt. Lewis E. Hughes, Sr. U.S. Army (Ret.) passed away at midnight on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at Navicent Health in Macon.

Born on January 12, 1949 in Hazelhurst, Georgia, Lewis recently turned 73. He was the son of the late Lonnie Hughes and Lounell Kersey Williams. From a young age, Lewis was a patriot. He enlisted with the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the 1st Battalion, 25th Infantry, D Company. There was no one more patriotic than Lewis. He was proud and true to the red, white, and blue. His time with the Army allowed him to travel all over the world. After his service to his beloved country, Lewis went to work for the United States Postal Service, where he was employed for 18 years before his retirement. A conservative to the core, Lewis possessed a strong moral compass and was very fair about any dispute. In his free time, Lewis was an avid fly fisherman and hunter. He loved to laugh and have fun. Most of all, Lewis was a family man who adored his wife, their three children, and his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Lonnie Hughes and Lounell Williams, Lewis was preceded in death by his siblings, Linda Etheridge, Jimmy Williams, and several other dear family members.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gloria Jean Tillman Hughes; children, Vicki Grabowski (David) of Georgia, Casondra Lykins (Tom) of Kentucky, and Lewis E. Hughes, Jr. of Georgia; grandchildren, Emily Lykins, Andrew Lykins, Joshua Hughes, Taylor Grabowski, Nathaniel Lykins, Abigail Lykins, Aiden Matherly, and Jaykob Hughes; and siblings, Larry Hughes and Carl Morris, along with many other adored nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022 at McCullough Funeral Home. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2022 in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at Magnolia Park Cemetery.
