It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Liane Nugteren on December 15, 2024, at the age of 87.
Liane was born Liane Albrecht on September 22, 1937, in Schwelm, Germany. Growing up in post-World War II Germany was difficult, but it was the foundation of her grit and perseverance. Her life significantly changed when she met the love of her life, Cornelius “Newt” Nugteren, a dashing United States Air Force fighter pilot in Bitburg, Germany. They married on October 6, 1956, beginning a 61-year marriage of love and commitment.
As an Air Force wife, Liane embodied grace and strength, navigating the challenges of military life with unwavering dedication. She created a loving home wherever the Air Force took her family. Beyond her role as a military spouse, Liane was deeply involved in the Officers’ Wives Club and volunteered at the American Red Cross. While at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Liane was awarded the highest and most prestigious honor given by the Red Cross, the Clara Barton award.
Upon retirement in 1988, Newt and Liane settled in Warner Robins, Georgia, where Newt served as commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center. Liane became an avid gardener and shared her love of music, travel and the natural world with everyone around her.
Liane is survived by her daughters, Cecile Nugteren Ross (Mike) and Aneli Nugteren (Steve Place); grandchildren, Eric Ross, Marli Kunce (Andrew), and Remy Place; and great-granddaughter, Weslee Kunce. She will be laid to rest at the Andersonville Historic National Military Cemetery next to her beloved husband.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Liane Nugteren will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross reflecting her commitment to helping those in need.
