Lovell O. Spackman, 85, entered into rest on Wednesday, October 15, 2008.
Colonel Spackman was born on March 20, 1923 in Thatcher, Idaho. He moved to San Francisco in 1936 and married Audrey Gregory in 1942. In that same year, he entered Aviation Cadets and subsequently served in World War II flying the "Hump" as a member of the 13th Combat Cargo Squadron. He also flew in support of the British 14th Army as they drove the Japanese forces out of Burma. Recalled into service during the Korean Conflict, he flew C-124 "Ole Shakey" Globemasters for eight years, first from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, then from Robins Air Force Base. He continued to serve during the Vietnam Conflict, flying C-130s eventually attaining the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and retiring in 1970.
Lovell's love of flying and of the U. S. Air Force continued into retirement. He first volunteered at the Travis Air Museum, receiving the President's Award in 1991 for his aircraft restoration work. Later, he spent several years in volunteer work at the Robins Air Force Base Museum of Aviation where he led a successful fundraiser to repaint the C-124 displayed there and focused his efforts on static displays of World War II campaigns, especially the China-Burma-India Theater. He was a member of the Daedalians. His decorations include the Air Medal with oak leaf clusters and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf clusters.
His parents, Francis Albert Spackman and Maida Marie Larsen Spackman, brothers Ray, Virgil, Jim and Pete; grandson Anthony Clance and granddaughter Tracy Spackman all preceded him in death.
His memory will forever be treasured by his wife, Audrey Spackman, Warner Robins; daughter, Candace Ann Clance, Warner Robins; son, Gregory Lee Spackman, (Pamela), Westerville, Ohio; sister, LaRue Patton, Reno, Nevada; grandchildren Michael Clance, Michele Wilson, Stephanie Hawkins, Christopher Spackman, Paul Spackman and Holly McHose; six great-granchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
