Arnold Smith, 89, passed away Saturday, May 8, 2010. Upon graduation from Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN, he enlisted in the Air Force. A World War II pilot, he flew in the Berlin Air Lift. He later served in the War Room at the Pentagon and had his final tour of duty at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Vietnam. Among his many service awards were the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service, the Air Medal, and the Bronze Star. He settled in Warner Robins, GA in 1970 upon his retirement.
An avid golfer, "Arnie" was a charter member of the Sandy Run Golf Course, predecessor to the International City Golf Club where he proudly held the membership number 001.
He was preceded in death by parents, Audrain E. and Hettie B. Smith, wife, Sarah Jane Oakley, and wife, Irene Hoefling Smith. He is survived by his sister, Juanita S. Carr of Hendersonville, TN, and niece Noroma C. Benz (Jack) of Goodlettsville, TN. A private family burial will be held in Livingston, TN. Contributions can be made in his memory to the Church Home for the Aged, P.O. Box 1376, Perry GA 31069, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Church Home for the Aged for their loving care of Colonel Smith, and to his neighbors and his golfing buddies for their friendship and prayers.
