Lucy Wiard, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2017, in Centerville, Georgia, at the age of 93.
Lucy was born on July 4, 1923, in Cobb County, Georgia, to the late T.A. and Cara Peek Pannell, she was the sixth of nine children. At the age of 17, she married Roy Wiard on August 23, 1940. They enjoyed a big family celebration of their 75th wedding anniversary in August 2015.
She attended Moultrie High School and got her GED in 1963. With a deep desire to continuously learn she went to business school and took shorthand, typing and other business classes. In her senior years, she attended Darton College, concentration on music and computer classes. She was a stay-at-home mother until her youngest child was in ninth grade, she then worked part time for Equifax.
She loved singing in the choir and playing the piano. She was a gifted seamstress and a wonderful cook who didn't hesitate to share her talents with others. It was not unusual for her to show up with homemade bread or a casserole when someone had a need.
She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior at the age of 10 following the first sermon that her dad preached. She cared for her parents and her older sister Eva when they were in advanced age. If there was a need for prayer, Lucy was the one her siblings usually called on for help.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Ronald Roy Wiard, two grandchildren, Paul Bryan Nunley and Angela Beth Nunley; sisters, Lena Adams, Annie Staton, Eva Pannell, and Thelma Spain; brothers, Willis T. "Sam" Pannell, Earnest Pannell and J.W. Pannell.
She is survived by her husband, Roy; three children, Brenda Kay Nunley (Odie), Danny Franklin Wiard (Louise), Angela Joy McDowell (Bob); 10 grandchildren, Victoria Lynn "Vikki" Wiard, Michael Wayne Wiard, Pamela Denise Moss, Deanna Joy Mathis, Bert Alan Nunley, Jay Carl Nunley, Jennifer Lynn Wiard, Elizabeth Marie Wiard, Angela Alese McDowell, Marleigh Anne McDowell; 14 great-grandchildren, Christopher, Bailey, Layne, Anna and Jacob Wiard; Rayhana, Quade, Rhett, Kip and Thane Nunley; Hayden Mathis; Gunner Moss; Austin Reeves, Chanel Powell; 1 great great-granddaughter, Alana Ledgister; and sister, Zelma Lillian Wachtel of Fountain Inn, South Carolina .
Visitation will be Sunday, February 12, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 13, 2017 in the chapel of First Freewill Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia with another visitation one hour prior to the service. Following the service, Mrs. Wiard will be laid to rest in Floral Memory Gardens in Albany, Georgia.
