Lynn Smith Campbell passed away on Friday, March 11, 2022.
Born in Macon to the late Stanley Eugene Smith, Jr. and the late Carolyn Coleman Smith, Lynn grew up in Perry and was a graduate of Perry High School. She went on to attend Mercer University from which she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Sciences and English, followed by a Master’s Degree in English Education.
A dedicated and passionate educator, Lynn was employed by the Houston County Board of Education for over 40 years, retiring a total of three times. She spent over three decades teaching English at Northside High School where she was also an integral part of the award winning Northside drama program where she designed and sewed so many of the beautiful costumes. Additionally, she was a member of the adjunct faculty at Georgia Military College on their Warner Robins campus. Lynn was a beloved teacher who had a profound impact on countless young people, was well respected by both her colleagues and students, and was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades during her career.
Beyond education, Lynn’s interests were varied and included theater, costuming, archeology, and ancient history. She spent hours in the Louvre Art Museum in Paris and Prado Art Museum in Madrid. She traveled with students and teachers to Bautzen, Germany, for a teacher-student exchange with the high school there. However, her favorite place to travel was Scotland with its rugged and beautiful landscape along with so many ancient stone henges and cairns. More than her travels, she also loved being at home. She found enjoyment in the pursuit of all her interests, but her relationships with family, both immediate and extended, were primary in her heart. Also, on occasion, a good gin and tonic may have made her list of life’s simple pleasures. Lynn was a member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Warner Robins.
Lynn is survived by her daughters, Stephanie Carol Campbell of Jasper, GA; and Susan Campbell Haggard of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Gwyn Haggard and Micah Haggard; former son-in-law, Kevin Haggard; sister, Susan Christine Smith (Bill) of Atlanta; niece, Shannon Nicolosi (Keith) and their children, Laura, Emma, Callyn, and Kristine, all of Roswell; nephew, Gene Smith (Abby) and their children, Reed and Ivy, all of Bainbridge Island, Washington State; and dear family friend, Howa Curtis, Jasper, GA.
