MAJ J.W. Kent, United States Army (Ret.), a proud Korean War veteran, peacefully passed away at Southern Pines Nursing Home in Warner Robins, on Sunday, April 28, 2024. He was 94 years old.
Born in Blount County, Alabama, J.W. was the son of the late Lester and Thelma Gilliand Kent. As a young man, J.W. enlisted in the United States Army and throughout the years, rose through the ranks retiring as a Major. Dedicated to serving his country, J.W. also served in the Navy Reserves, United States Air Force, and National Guard. After his military retirement, he continued to support his country as a civilian for several years until his final retirement in 1991.
With numerous interests, J.W. coached baseball, enjoyed hunting, and was a pistol team coach of the Alabama National Guard. He told many great stories and loved to travel.
Of the Christian faith, J.W. earlier in his faith walk served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, was a part of the Helping Hands Ministry and was a Royal Ambassadors leader. J.W. was also devoted member of Second Baptist Church.
His memory will forever be treasured by his wife of 70 years, Joann Kent; children, Rex Kent (Martha), Debbie Carthen (James) and Sonja Hays; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; as well as his siblings, Claudette Engelhart (Stan), and Trenton Kent.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 2, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Magnolia Park Cemetery where J.W. Kent will be laid to rest with Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of MAJ J.W. Kent, United States Army (Ret.) to Second Baptist Church Building Fund, 2504 Moody Road, Warner Robins, Georgia 31088.
