Marcia Ann Mayo, 72, passed away at home on the afternoon of Saturday, July 9, 2022. Born in Waycross, GA on February 9, 1950, she was the daughter of the late George and Perrie Ling Mayo and was preceded in death by her brother, Sandy Mayo.
Marcia grew up in Isle of Hope, GA and was a 1967 graduate of Savannah’s Jenkins High School. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Georgia and pursued a long teaching career in Houston County. Mrs. Mayo served in various classroom and administrative positions in the field of education. A lower grades teacher and former principal at Linwood Elementary School were positions that most students and parents alike will fondly remember her for. While serving as principal and raising three children, Marcia earned a Master’s Degree from Georgia Southwestern University and a Doctorate Degree from the University of Georgia. She enjoyed being a part of the Kappa Delta Sorority with UGA. She went on to become a professor at Georgia Southwestern University and finished her career in the Atlanta Public School System.
The years that followed her full-time teaching career were filled with volunteering at the Atlanta History Center, authoring four books, writing for numerous magazines, traveling, and art. Marcia was a beautiful artist in many mediums, including painting and weaving. She also took many opportunities in her retirement years to read to children in different classrooms. Mrs. Mayo devoted countless time and effort with her children and grandchildren over the years. She genuinely loved them all and was extremely proud of them.
Marcia is survived by her loving husband, Joe Guiendon of Marietta; children, Melissa Stelson (Trevor) of Warner Robins, GA, Billy Talbert (Amelia Bambam) of Longview, WA, Molly Franklin (Allen) of Raleigh, NC, and Meghan Driggers (Chris) and Bobby Guiendon (Heather), both of Marietta; grandchildren, Georgia and Miles Stelson, Cameron Talbert, Hannah, Haley and Aiden Franklin, Jonathan Driggers and Lillian and Eleanor Guiendon; and previous husband, Gary Talbert of Centerville.
