Margaret "Susan" Karns

Margaret “Susan” Karns, age 73, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2025. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and educator.

Born on February 24, 1952, in Van Nuys, California, Susan was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Mary Lou Hampton. She grew up in Warner Robins, Georgia, where she graduated from Northside High School. Furthering her education at Georgia College and State University, Susan earned a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. For 28 years, Susan devoted her career to the Peach County Board of Education, spending all of her time teaching at Byron Elementary School.

Outside of her professional career, Susan was a creative soul with a love for painting, reading, and writing. She also enjoyed traveling. However, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her siblings, Jeannie Smith and John Hampton (Larry).

Her memory will forever be treasured by her husband of 54 years, John Arthur Karns; children, Angela Slaton (Michael) and Erica Lewis (Matt); grandsons, Jonathan Lewis, Ian Lewis, and Joshua Slaton; brothers William Hampton, Jr. (Bill) and Michael Hampton; as well as beloved grand dog, “Bella.”

Visitation will be Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Margaret Susan Karns will be laid to rest in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
