Mary Ann Oyler, 83, passed away at home on Friday, April 5, 2019.
Mrs. Oyler was born on April 6, 1935 in Byron, Georgia, to the late Ferrell Hoke Smith and Annie Tead Holloman Smith. She graduated from Byron High School where she was on the basketball team. Mrs. Oyler retired from Robins Air Force Base after 40 years as an Aircraft Overhaul Supervisor. She was well-traveled, having been to many different Air Force bases all over the world including Korea, Hawaii, and Okinawa, Japan, as she repaired and updated F-15’s. One of her most treasured memories was having the opportunity to fly in an F-15 while in Okinawa. She was also the proud recipient of the Women’s Federal Program Award.
Mrs. Oyler loved to fish and hunt, and in 2004 she was featured in Georgia Outdoor News magazine with a huge buck. Another of her great loves was riding her beloved horse, “Mingo.” Mary Ann and her son, Buck, traveled all over the state of Georgia competing in barrel racing competitions and she proudly displayed the many awards that she and “Mingo” won. Mrs. Oyler attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness in Fort Valley, Georgia.
Mrs. Oyler was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylord; sister, Frances Graham; and brothers, Hiram, Felix, and Morgan Smith.
She is survived by her two sons, Buck Carter (Elaine) of Kathleen, and Allen Carter of Fort Valley; brothers, Seborn Smith (Charlene) of Byron, and Jim Smith (Beth) of Covington; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 7, 2019, from 4:00 until 5:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 5:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Mrs. Oyler will be laid to rest in Byron City Cemetery following the service.
