Mary Florence Gentry

October 23, 1919 — September 11, 2008

Mrs. Mary Florence Crook Gentry, 88, passed from this life into the next on September 11, 2008 at Heart of Georgia Hospice Inpatient Unit in Perry Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2008, at McCullough Funeral Home Chapel with interment following in Magnolia Park Cemetery. Dr. Allen Hughes and Reverend Sydney Odom will officiate.

Mary was born October 23, 1919 in Early County, Georgia, the daughter of Otis A. Crook and Beulah Douglas Ingram Crook. She grew up in Arlington, Georgia and Greensboro, South Carolina, graduating from Damascus High School near Arlington. Her father died when she was a child. Upon high school graduation, she and her mother moved to Macon where Mary initially worked for the McAfee Candy Company and then as a clerk/typist at Camp Wheeler while attending Mercer University at night. Mary married John Charlton Gentry, Jr. on February 23, 1952 at First Baptist Church, Macon. She was a clerk/typist at Robins Air Force Base for several years, until after her first child was born.

For over forty-four years she was a member of First Baptist Church, Warner Robins, until she moved to Gainesville, Georgia to help her daughter, Kay, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. She was also a member of the Bridge Club and the Cherokee Garden Club. In June 2006, Mary moved back to Warner Robins and joined First Baptist Church, Centerville, when her son, Ray, became Associate Pastor of Biblical Guidance there.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Gentry, Jr. (1990), her brother, James L. Crooke (1994), and her daughter, Kay Gentry Bauerband (2004). Cherishing her memory are her son, Charlton Ray Gentry (Debra) and five granddaughters, April Gentry, Allison Gentry, Joy Bauerband, Caroline Bauerband and Hallie Bauerband.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to those at Summer's Landing Assisted Living and Heart of Georgia Hospice for all of their care and concern.

The family will receive friends Saturday, September 13, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Heart of Georgia Hospice, 103 Westridge Drive, Warner Robins GA 31088 or to First Baptist Church, 108 Church Street, Centerville GA 31028.
