Mary Justus Hughes went home to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of April 16th at Presbyterian Home in Quitman, Georgia. She was born to the late Augustine Miller Justus and Lillian Johnson Justus of Great Falls, South Carolina. She was married to the late Charles E. Hughes for forty three years until his death April 14, 1989.
Mary was a devoted wife and mother. Her husband, Charles, made a career of the Army. Mary was mostly a mother and housewife who cared lovingly for her family as they traveled from one duty station to another. When Charles retired from the Army in 1968, the family settled in Warner Robins. Mary remained a resident of Warner Robins until July, 2009. She was a member of Sandy Valley Baptist Church.
Mary is survived by two sons, Robert Hughes of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; Wayne Hughes of Valdosta; and one sister, Mae Jean Hattaway, Warner Robins; five grandchildren, Christy Gulledge, Eric Hughes, Georgiana Tufts, Robert Hughes, Eldon Hughes, four great-grandchildren, Luke Gulledge, Sophia Gulledge, Caleb Hughes, and Tabitha Tufts; three step-grandchildren, Adenie Chavez-Land, Emmer Chavez, and Ximena Chavez Cole. Mary was preceded in death by a son, Richard E. Hughes, a sister, Frances Justus, and five brothers: Gus Justus, Arthur Lee Justus, Charlie Justus, J.B. Justus, and John Ray Justus.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 19, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, in the McCullough Funeral Home Chapel, Reverend Phil Bryant, pastor of Sandy Valley Baptist Church, and Reverend Bill Martin will be officiating.
