Merrill attended Walton High School where she was member of the Walton Raider color guard. As a member of the color guard, she participated in the 1996 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies in Atlanta, Georgia. She later graduated from Harrison High School.

Merrill will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by her wife, Amy; her bonus daughters, Taylor and Alisha; her bonus grandson, Greyson; her mother, Jeanne Ann; her brother, Tyler (Kelsey); her stepmother, Lee; her half sister, Bailey (Will); and stepsisters, Allie (Christopher) and Reynolds (Drew). Merrill was preceded in death by her father, Joe.
