Myrtis Peavy Stokes

August 27, 1921 — April 15, 2022

Myrtis Peavy Stokes, former longtime resident of Warner Robins and proud centurion, walked into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the afternoon of Friday, April 15, 2022. She was born on August 27, 1921, in Pulaski County, GA, one of seven children, to the late B.G. and Pearl Ransom Peavy.

As a preteen, Myrtis met her husband and soulmate, James “J.W.”, at Double Branch Freewill Baptist Church in Unadilla, the church where she was a member up until her passing. They were hopelessly devoted to one another and were happily married as a young couple. Myrtis was firstly a dedicated mother to her son, Jimmy, but passionately served as a military wife as she was constantly on the move with her family. Unfortunately, J.W. passed away in August of 1999, but it only made her bond stronger with her son, grandchildren, siblings, and extended family. Myrtis had a special relationship with each family member and loved nothing more than to be in their company. She took great joy in organizing all of the Peavy’s family reunions and showcasing her wonderful cooking skills! Myrtis’ spicy spaghetti sauce was always a hit, but so were countless other dishes that she whipped up. She also loved to dote on and spoil her grandchildren and enjoyed sewing clothes for them over the years. Up until her 100th birthday, Myrtis was extremely healthy and took care of herself. She was excited to celebrate her 100th birthday at her favorite restaurant, Ole Times, with her family. Myrtis will be remembered by everyone who knew her as a wonderful person with the sweetest soul.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, J.W. Stokes; her son, James “Jimmy” Stokes; and her siblings, Virgil Peavy, Calvin Peavy, Mattie Lou Robinson, Woodrow Peavy, Emmett Peavy and Aurelia Foster.

She is survived by her loving granddaughters, Michelle Moody of Columbus, GA and Kim Stokes of Ellerslie, GA; great-grandsons, Wesley Brown of AL and Sean Moody of GA; great-great-grandchildren, Sydnie Brown and Elijah Moody; and was Aunt Myrtis to numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 19, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. After the service, Myrtis will be laid to rest next to J.W. in Magnolia Park Cemetery.
