It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Natalie Barone Bassett on March 19, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on December 29, 1935, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to the late Frank and Mary DeFalco Barone, Natalie lived a life filled with passion, resilience, and dedication to the betterment of others.
Natalie’s journey began in the classrooms of her youth, where she graduated high school and went on to earn a master's degree in Psychological Counseling. Her education set the stage for a career that would leave a lasting impact on countless lives.
In the early years of her professional life, Natalie pioneered the Family Readiness program for the United States Air Force. This groundbreaking initiative, which aimed to support and strengthen families during military deployment, became a cornerstone of military social services and reflected her deep commitment to preserving the bonds that hold families together.
Natalie was a passionate advocate for social norms and always stood up for what she believed was right. She walked in the Selma to Montgomery march in Alabama in 1965, a symbol of her tireless dedication to civil rights. She was also at the Berlin Wall when it fell, witnessing a monumental moment in history and the triumph of freedom.
Her love for justice extended to her everyday life, where she consistently fought for people’s rights and remained fiercely loyal to those she loved. A lover of life, Natalie found joy in simple pleasures such as cooking, enjoying a good cocktail, playing Bridge, reading, and traveling. Her stubbornness and independence were trademarks of her personality; she lived life on her own terms, creating her own rules and walking her own path.
Above all, Natalie was deeply devoted to her children, who were her greatest source of joy and love. She was kind-hearted, strong, fierce, and loyal to a fault—a woman who made her mark on the world and on the hearts of those who knew her.
Along with her parents, Natalie was preceded in death by her daughter, Kim Bassett; and sister Cecilia Bichelli.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her son, Mark Bassett (Josie); granddaughters, Shauna Jennings and Victoria Bassett; great-grandson, Hudson Jennings; and sisters, Peggy Ashcerl and Mary Fran DuMont.
