Norman Lewis Swartzlander

Norman Lewis Swartzlander, 82, entered into rest on Tuesday, March 15, 2011.

Mr. Swartzlander was born on March 6, 1929. A native of Valley View, Pennsylvania, he has lived in Warner Robins, Georgia since 1963. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1971. He was a veteran of WWII (Occupation forces in Germany), the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Conflict. He served five years in the United States Army as an Automotive Mechanic and Lineman, and the remainder of his military service in the United States Air Force as an Aircraft Jet Mechanic and Munitions controller. He made Master Crew Chief in 1966. He was the recipient of many medals, awards, and diplomas.

After retiring from military service he started a new career in Carpentry, and belonged to Carpenter's Local #144 for many years. Mr. Swartzlander was very active in volunteer work, and was in at the inception of Houston County Civil Defense and Rescue and also worked as a volunteer with Houston County Auxiliary Police, and later became Auxiliary Deputy Sherriff. He was trained in Light and Heavy Duty Rescue, Water Rescue, American Red Cross First Aid, Advanced First Aid and Emergency First Aid.

Mr. Swartzlander was of the Baptist Faith and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Warner Robins, Georgia. He gave unselfishly of his time and talent in the reconstruction of the First Baptist Church Chapel, which was originally built in 1942.

He was the son of the late Naomi Margaret Bixler of Valley View, Pennsylvania and Paul Emanuel Swartzlander of Sacramento, Pennsylvania. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty six years, JoAnne Starnes Swartzlander, and one brother, Lester H. Swartzlander.

He is survived by four sons, Daniel Swartzlander, David Swartzlander, and Dale Swartzlander, all of Warner Robins; and MSgt Darryle Swartzlander, USAF (Ret) of Indianapolis, Indiana; grandchildren, Joshua Swartzlander, Perry, Georgia; Amber Price, Orlando, Florida; Logan Swartzlander, Las Vegas, Nevada; Sean Bush, Atlanta, Georgia; two great grandchildren; three sisters, Gloria J. Zimmerman, Lebanon, Pennsylvania; Janice R. Mars, Pine Grove, Pennsylvania; Patricia A. Mindy, Pine Grove, Pennsylvania; brothers, Larry J. Swartzlander, Orlando, Florida; Paul T. Swartzlander, Bethel, Pennsylvania; and numerous other family members.

Visitation will be Friday evening, March 18, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011 in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Magnolia Park Mausoleum. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care Options, 136 Hospital Drive, Warner Robins, Ga. 31088.
