Ola Salmond

Ola Salmond (née Chasteen) entered Our Father's eternal rest on Saturday, December 22, 2012. She was born to George and Vesta Chasteen on August 28, 1938 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Ola was a Master Gardener and active member and leader of the Village Green Garden Club of Byron where she often served as a judge at flower shows sponsored by the club. She was a former member of the Pilot Club of Warner Robins where she held several offices and appointments and was selected by her peers as Pilot of the Year 2002-03 in recognition of exceptional volunteerism. She was a big supporter of the Georgia Artists with Disabilities sponsored by the Pilot Club of Atlanta. She was also honored with an appointment to the GA District Pilot International Membership Committee. Ola was always ready to volunteer her time and energy to the Pilot Club's and many community service projects. In addition, she volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Macon, the Federated Garden Club of Macon and as a Pink Lady at Houston Medical Center.
Ola was a career federal civil servant and retired from the Defense Information Systems Agency, Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, in 2000 where she was a Human Resources Analyst. During her career, she received numerous awards recognizing her exceptional work performance. In her life, she and her husband traveled widely, worked in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm and traveled throughout Europe together during that assignment. In 1991, Ola was recognized by General Norman Schwarzkopf on behalf of the United States Central Command for having outstanding performance for providing critical personnel assistance as a member of the Air Force Logistics Support Group.
Ola was well loved and respected and was truly a friend to everyone she met.
Ola was preceded in death by parents George and Vesta Chasteen of Atlanta, Georgia, Brother George, Jr., and sister Emma Jo Gillis (last name). Ola is survived by her husband, Lee of Byron; daughters, Catherine (Richard) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Sandra (Don) of Corvallis, Oregon; stepchildren, Laurie (Brian) Nash of Sanford, Florida, and Dan Salmond of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren Katherine, Rykie (Christopher), Justin, Caitlin, Mason, Luke and Andrew; and sister Miriam Farmer of Atlanta.
A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to The National Brain Tumor Society (http://www.braintumor.org).
