Olan Grady Brooks, a proud and honorable veteran, soared into Heaven on the morning of Tuesday, November 21, 2023, where he was granted the gift of eyesight. Born on November 22, 1938, in Columbus, Georgia, Olan was the son of the late Olin H. Brooks and Eula Mae Brooks.
After graduating from Jordan High School in 1957, Olan's life was marked by a commitment to service and a love for his country. In 1967-1968, during the Vietnam War, he served with pride and distinction in the United States Air Force, finding joy in the camaraderie of military life and engaging in sports. His dedication to duty and sacrifice for his nation will forever be remembered. Coinciding his Air Force career, Olan attended Auburn, Troy, and Atlanta University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree of science in criminal justice, a master’s in science, as well as a second master’s degree of social work.
Following his military service, Olan embarked on a new chapter as a certified clinical social worker at the Houston County Board of Education. His passion for helping others, particularly teenagers, shone brightly as he worked tirelessly to meet the needs of the students under his care.
Olan appreciated the simple pleasures of life, from the companionship of a good dog to the enjoyment of delectable cuisine. He had a love for travel and cruising, especially to Alaska. Olan also found great joy in his role as an uncle to his beloved nieces and nephews. He attended Central Baptist Church in Warner Robins.
In addition to his parents, Olan was preceded in death by his siblings, Earnest Griffin Brooks, and Larry H. Brooks.
His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife of 24 years, Naomi Turner Brooks; children, Tony Frye, and Joni Lynn Henderson (Brent); 3 grandchildren; as well as 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Earl Brooks (Sandy); and beloved fur-baby, “Ellie Mae.”
