Paul William Miller, 92, died Sunday, July 16, 2006. He was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania on October 12, 1913, the son of Catherine Baird Miller and Gilbert Miller. He lived in Franklin until 1939 when he moved to Atlanta.
Mr. Miller served as assistant to the industrial engineer of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. During that period, he wrote and edited the American Guide Series Book, ATLANTA – CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH.
He left the Chamber to serve in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the South Pacific during World War II for 3 ½ years.
In 1945, he returned to the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and had a life-long career in economic development. In 1952, he and his family moved to Roanoke, Virginia where he created and managed the economic development department for the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce. After 4 ½ years in Virginia, in 1957, the Millers returned to Atlanta where Paul rose to be the Manager of Economic Development for the Chamber of Commerce. He worked for two administrations of Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr. during which he created the framework to establish the Forward Atlanta program. He left the Chamber of Commerce in 1973 to serve as Manager, Industrial Development, for First National Bank of Atlanta (now Wachovia), and retired in 1975.
During the 1960’s, Paul served as president of the American Economic Development Council and the Southern Economic Development Council.
In retirement, Mr. Miller took great pleasure in fishing, painting and writing both poetry and prose. In 2003, he published his memoirs, Life’s Special Times Recalled.
Mr. Miller was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Mary Allyn Harrison Miller, her daughter, Anthony Allyn (Toni) Duncan and his brother Russell Miller.
A memorial service will he held in the chapel of All Saints Episcopal Church-Atlanta Wednesday, July 19, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Paul’s memory to Trees Atlanta, 96 Poplar Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30303 or to All Saints Episcopal Church, 634 West Peachtree Street, NW, Atlanta, GA. 30308.
