Paula E. Hague, (Nana Paula), formerly of Marco Island, Florida, 71, born in Shreveport Louisiana on March 5, 1940, completed her journey here on earth on Monday, February 20, 2012. Paula has gone to join her long beloved husband Frank, her sister Margie, and her parents, Doris and Billy Walters.
While battling cancer, Paula finally ended the suffering and has gone beyond the pearly gates to be reunited with her family. Paula lived a full life, especially as a young woman. Growing up as an "Air Force brat" she lived all over the world. With family ties to southern Louisiana and Texas, Paula became an outstanding cook and caterer. Those lucky enough were able to "dine around the world" from her kitchen. Paula had an "infectious" laugh and was always easy to find at the party. Fifty years ago while living in Byron, Georgia. Paula met a young newspaper man and married Frank Hague, from Newnan Georgia. She was active in various family newspaper ventures as well as taking an active role in higher education. Paula served for years as an administrator for Gadsden State College in Alabama. During the earlier years, Paula parlayed a God given talent for cooking and catering where she made friends across the South with her famous kitchen skills. Besides being an avid and traveling bridge tournament player, Paula was a proud Alabama Crimson Tide fan. Saturday afternoons will not be quite the same without the loud and proud "Roll Tide" being left on voicemails all over the south. Paula and Frank Hague relocated to Marco Island in 1983 when Frank accepted a position with the New York Times as Publisher of The Marco Island EAGLE newspaper. Paula built a close circle of friends while on Marco Island where she was active in the community and continued to impress with her culinary expertise. Paula was fun and gregarious, but most of all, her love and adoration for her granddaughters on Marco Island was her number one priority. "Nana Paula" did not miss a holiday of any sort, as an opportunity to shower gifts on "Nana Paula's" girls, Caitlin Curtis, Frankie, Maddie and Ellie Hague, all born and raised on Marco. After her tour of duty on Marco Island, Paula relocated back home to Georgia to be closer to her ailing mother. She was a tireless member of the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce. Paula honed her skills as a tenacious bridge player, often winning at traveling events. The final days for Paula were spent battling cancer and yet still trying to stay in touch with her granddaughters. "Nana Paula" made her final trip back here to "paradise' in 2009 for Christmas.
Paula is survived by her children, Bill Hague of Marco Island, and Sheri Hague Rafferty of Tampa, Fl., their respective spouses Stephanie and Bernie, and four granddaughters who were the light of her life. "Nana Paula's" gregarious laugh and ability to befriend everyone at the party will be greatly missed, not to mention the voicemails on Marco Island will be a bit quieter this year as the college football season approaches.
A Memorial Mass celebrating Paula's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2012 in Saint Joseph Catholic Church located at 830 Poplar Street Macon, Georgia 31201. Father Allan McDonald will officiate. Committal services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, in Andersonville National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society for Kidney Cancer Research, 804 Cherry Street Ste. A, Macon, Georgia 31201.
