Rev. Hugie B. Walker

April 21, 1919 — February 25, 2013

Hugie B. Walker, resident of Fort Valley since 1999 and member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, passed away in Macon, Georgia on Monday, February 25, 2013. Rev. Walker, one of seven children, was born on April 21, 1919 in Roberta, Georgia. His parents were Gustavus and Willie Miller Walker.

Graduating from Fort Valley State College in 1941, he received B.A. degrees in History and English before entering Bishop Payne Divinity Episcopal Seminary in Petersburg, Virginia, where he attained a Masters of Divinity. Ordained in 1945 as an Episcopal priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, Rev. Walker was assigned as rector to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Griffin, Georgia serving for ten years, and for the last three years of that tenure, he also served as interim priest at Christ Church in Macon, Georgia.

Intent on serving both God and country, Rev. Walker undertook a major career change in 1956 by becoming a chaplain in the United States Air Force, where he served for twenty years, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1976. During the course of his military career, he traveled extensively, including stations in New York, Puerto Rico, Guam, Korea, Texas and Arizona.

Resuming his civilian ministry, Rev. Walker became a rector of the Episcopal House of Prayer in Tampa, Florida, a position he held for nearly ten years. In the late 1980s, Rev. Walker retired from the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Florida and moved to Warner Robins, Georgia, where he became an interim priest, conducting services primarily at All Saints in Warner Robins and at St. Luke's in Fort Valley before finally retiring in the early 2000s.

Rev. Walker is survived by five children by his former and now deceased wife, Dollye; Dr. Gustavus Walker of E. Amherst, New York, Hugh Walker of Houston, Texas, Kenneth Walker of Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. Navy CAPT Daniel Walker of San Antonio, Texas, and Ann Marie Jones of Bartlett, Tennessee. He leaves three stepdaughters by his deceased wife, Norma; Denise Vinke of Dallas, Texas, Cynthia Webster of Houston, Texas, and Vicki Puskaric of Salinas, California. He also leaves with loving memories thirteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, his sister, Juanita Thompson of Monticello, Georgia and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Fort Valley with entombment following in Magnolia Park Mausoleum at 3:30 p.m. The Rev. Brian K. Davy will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests that donations be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1000 State University Drive, Fort Valley, GA 31030.
