Reverend Hershel Sizemore gained his Heavenly reward when he met his Savior face to face and heard the words he longed for the most, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant,” on the afternoon of June 5, 2022. He was 74 years old.
Born and raised in Phenix City, Alabama, he graduated from Central High School in Phenix City in 1966. Through a cousin, Hershel was introduced to Vanessa Brown, who lived in Barnesville, Georgia. After courting her and driving to Barnesville every weekend, Hershel and Vanessa were married. He spent the next 53 years doting on the love of his life. Hershel worked as a lineman for Alabama Power before joining the United States Navy Reserves. He was called to active duty where he and his wife were stationed in San Diego, California. After his time in the military, the pair moved back to the South where Hershel again worked as an electrician in Forsyth, Georgia and Plant City, Alabama. It was during this time the Lord called Hershel to ministry and he heeded God’s call, spending the next 47 years dedicating his life to preaching the word of God. He attended Florida Baptist Theological Seminary in Grace, Florida. After graduating from seminary school, Hershel pastored various churches before founding Lighthouse Baptist Church in 1999. He was the pastor and served in various capacities at Lighthouse until his passing. Hershel was a proud graduate of Mercer University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in theology. A passionate and dedicated fan of the Macon Mayhem hockey team, Hershel also served as their team chaplain. He loved the Auburn Tigers and action movies. As someone who never met a stranger, Hershel loved people and ministering to them. Hershel was, without a doubt, a faithful servant to the Lord.
Preceding Hershel in death were his parents, Alfred and Lollie Hamrick Sizemore; and his sister, Helen Richards.
Left to treasure his memory are his wife of 53 years, Vanessa Brown Sizemore; children, Reverend Tim Sizemore (Tonya) Of Macon, Cara Shey Havlicsek (Jamie) of Byron, and Joel Sizemore (Anna Beth) of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Libby Kelly (Taylor), Leah Skinner (Justin), Logan Sizemore, Emerson and C.J. Havlicsek, Kale Isla and Barret Sizemore; and great grandchild, Parker Jane Kelly.
