Major General Richard F. Gillis, USAF, Ret., died September 16, 2002 at his residence. Services will be held at 4:00 pm on Friday, September 20 in the Chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with interment to be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at 9:00 am in Arlington National Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, immediately prior to the service, from 3:00 until 4:00 pm.

Major General Gillis was born in Passaic, NJ. After beginning his career as an enlisted man, he was retired from the United States Air Force in 1992 as Commander, Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, after 38 years of service. He served four years in Southeast Asia during Vietnam and was a fighter pilot with flying time in a dozen aircraft. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Medal, as well as numerous other honors. Since his retirement he has served as an Aerospace Consultant and Vice President of Aviation Sales Company; President of Aerocorp San Antonio; and most recently a Vice President with Alderman and Company of New York City and as a North American Marketing Representative for Airod of Malaysia. His father, Fred Gillis, mother, Helen Gillis and a grandson, Jeff Murphy, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Vera V. Gillis, Warner Robins; son, Kevin (Kimalynn) Gillis, New Jersey; daughter, Sheryl (John) Murphy, Arkansas; son, Jeff (Paula) Gillis, Texas; stepdaughter, Diana Ford, Florida; grandchildren, Kimberly Burch, Brooke Gillis, Dorothea Gillis, Jenalynn Gillis; Amber Gillis; Rowdy Gillis; Joe Murphy, Maegan Murphy; and a great-grandchild, Makayla Burch.
