Our beloved husband, “Daddy,” “Pipi,” brother, uncle, and “friend to all”, at the age of 87 and surrounded by his wife and children at home, met his Savior on the afternoon of September 27, 2023.
Ed was born in Byron in 1936 and grew up at his favorite place on earth, “the farm,” with his beloved parents and sisters. He attended school in Byron and began a long career with Standard Oil/Chevron, first hauling gas and later operating Dunbar Chevron in Byron where he met many wonderful people. He met the love of his life, Barbara King Dunbar, at Vinson Valley. They married in 1958 and shared 65 wonderful years together. Ed accepted Jesus into his heart at the age of 29 and loved serving Him for almost 60 years. While operating the service station, he also enjoyed farming and caring for the land given to him by his parents. After the death of his parents and his retirement from Chevron in 1990, he began a thirty-year career in law enforcement with his longtime friend, Sheriff Cullen Talton, and the Houston County Sheriff’s Department retiring with a rank of Captain. Other than being a husband and daddy, this proved to be his next most rewarding job.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, R. E. and Mary Dunbar, and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Mary King, brothers-in-law, a niece, and a great niece – all whom he loved dearly.
He was a servant of people and loved everyone which was evident by his dimpled smile and handshake when you met him. He served in the Mechanized Unit of the Georgia National Guard and Byron Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He served as a Peach County Board of Education member and Byron City Councilman for a combined 30 years. He had served throughout his life at Byron United Methodist Church, Hardison Baptist Church, Green Acres Baptist (ordained deacon), and most recently at Second Baptist Church where he was a member of the Joy Jubilee Sunday School Class.
Ed is survived by his wife, Barbara Dunbar; his children, Debbie Whyte (Peter), Diana Woodham (Jim), Robert E. (Robbie) Dunbar IV (Dawn); his grandchildren, Laura Whyte (Ryan Rose), Ryan Woodham (Emma), Drew Woodham (Quincy Haisley), and Cara Dunbar Grantham (Logan); great granddaughter, Mary Mae Grantham; his three sisters, Sue Kinsaul, Aileen Colquitt, and Elizabeth Holleman; and many nieces and nephews. He loved his family so much and the sparkle in his eyes will always shine in theirs.
A visitation with family and friends will be held from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service honoring Ed’s life will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Ed will be laid to rest in Byron City Cemetery.
The family will accept flowers or donations may be given in memory of Robert Edgar (Ed) Dunbar, III, to Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Home, 1000 Sheriffs Way, Madison, Georgia 30650.
