On Tuesday, September 6, 2022, Roger Marion Darnell passed away at his residence. He was 84 years old.
Roger was the son of the late Charles and Gladys Smith Darnell. He was born on October 28, 1937, in Kansas, and was raised in Ryan, Oklahoma. Roger graduated from Ryan High School where he enjoyed playing football and was a part of the band. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree at Oklahoma State University, where he studied Geography. On August 8, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Kay. The love they shared was truly special and they had a beautiful life together. Following his education in 1962, Roger pursued a career in logistics. He first served at Tinker Air Force Base, followed by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where Roger became the highest ranked civilian in Air Force Logistics Command at that time. He continued his education in 1982 at Air War College (AWC) in Montgomery, Alabama, before settling in Warner Robins. Roger retired from Robins Air Force Base in 1989 as a Senior Executive Service Member. After retirement, he continued supporting the United States Air Force as a contractor.
In his spare time, Roger enjoyed reading, doing genealogy research, and building projects. He also loved bird watching while relaxing on his back porch, gardening, playing golf, collecting antique cars, and going to cruise-ins. Over the years, Roger was passionate about singing at churches and was a devoted member of Centerville Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Warner Robins Rotary Club.
Although Roger held many important titles throughout his life, among the most valuable remained husband (Rog), dad, grandfather, Papa, brother, son and friend. He loved his family unconditionally and will be tremendously missed.
In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Cass; and brother, Charles Darnell.
His legacy will live on through his wife of 63 years, Twyla Kay Darnell; children, Jim Darnell (Faye) of Centerville and Marian Speck (Kevin) of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Regena Piper (Brad), Jimmy Darnell (Brandy), Dana Turner (Eric), Amanda Smith (Ryan), Holly Rathel (Charlie), Joshua Detrick (Julia), Janalee Shi (Andrew); and 21 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday September 9, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home .A funeral service celebrating Roger’s life will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with Reverend Tommy Odum officiating.
The family will accept flowers or donations may be given in memory of Roger to Alzheimer’s Association, 886 Mulberry Street, Macon, Georgia 31201.
