Ruth Y. Grantham, 95, entered into rest on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
Born on February 16, 1929, in Pitts, Georgia, Ruth was the daughter of the late Henry Thomas and Ada Lee Lowery Yawn. A proud graduate of Pitts High School, she was the Valedictorian of the Class of 1946 and excelled as a basketball player.
After high school, Ruth initially worked at a garment factory in Cordele, where she made ladies' blouses, then transitioned to making men's jackets and sports coats as the company changed hands. She eventually rose through the ranks to become the personnel director for the company with 600-700 employees.
Ruth married her husband, Kenneth (KL) Grantham, in 1958. After the birth of their daughter, Mona, she stayed at home to care for her. Ruth then returned to work after Mona was in the 4th grade and joined the staff at Citizen State Bank (which later became First Atlanta, and eventually, Wachovia.) She took pride in her role as secretary, among other duties, and cherished the relationships she built with the bank’s customers during her 21-year career.
Active in her community, Ruth was a member of the Greenbriar Garden Club and the Warner Robins Women’s Club. She once served as president for both clubs. Ruth also enjoyed working in her yard and took great pride in her garden. She found joy in staying active, working out at Dino's Gym well into her 80s.
Above all, Ruth’s faith was an integral part of her life; she was a devoted member of Central Baptist Church for over 60 years, where she served as Sunday School Secretary, and was involved in the Helping Hands Ministry. Ruth’s attention to detail showed as she dedicated her time and energy to helping decorate the church for Christmas. She was also active in Central 5-0 where she served as the group’s travel coordinator and planned trips for the members. Her dedication to her family, friends, church, and community will be deeply missed.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Leslie Grantham; and siblings, Rreece Ellis (Willard), Henry Thomas Yawn, Jr. (Emmie), and Lula Belle Bryan.
She is survived by her daughter, Mona Padgett (Drew); granddaughter, Bobbie Proffitt (Harrison); and great-granddaughter, Tatum Ruth Proffitt; as well as many other extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 22, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Central Baptist Church. Afterward, Ruth Y. Grantham will be laid to rest in the Parkway Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
