Sandy Lansford Smith

June 1, 1945 — October 26, 2015

Sandra Lucille Lansford "Sandy" Smith died on Monday, October 26, 2015 after a brief illness.

The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. O.G. Lansford of Powersville was born in Miami, Florida on June 1, 1945, but having lived in Powersville since the age of 18 months, considered it home. Sandy graduated Salutatorian from Byron High School in 1963. Having found Johnny, the love of her life, they married in December of the same year.

Sandy was very active in the community. She was Chairman of the Fund Drive for the American Cancer Society of Peach County. Her love for history and the preservation of Peach County led her to co-find the Byron Area Historical Society where she presided as President for two terms. Sandy was also a 40 plus year member of the Village Green Garden Club of Byron where she was President for several terms. Her love of flowers and gardening led her to become a Master Flower Show Judge, a 13 year endeavor; becoming the first member to achieve this status. Sandy was past President of the Peachland Garden Council, and a member of the Middle Georgia Council of Flower Show Judges in Macon, Georgia. She had also been a Landscape Design Critic since 1995.

Sandy was a former member of DFACS Board of Peach County and a current member of the Peach County Library Board where she represented the Northern/Byron end of the county. She was a Sunday School Teacher at Hardison Baptist Church for 16 years, and then transferred her membership closer to home to Powersville United Methodist Church.

Sandy or "DeeDee," is survived by her soul mate of nearly 52 years, Johnny E. Smith of Powersville; sons, Wesley Graham "Wes" Smith of Atlanta and Ashley Lansford "Ash" Smith, Sr of Augusta; daughter-in-law, Amanda Neal Smith of Augusta; the two loves of her life, her grandchildren, Ashley Lansford "Ford" Smith, Jr. and Charlie Reese Smith, both of Augusta; her other "boys," Mike Mazo and Scott Mazo, both of Warner Robins, and Brian D. Perry of Atlanta; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ottis Graham Lansford and Lucille Bowman Lansford; sister, Martha L. Mazo; and Uncle Breen G. Lansford.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Sandy's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2015 in the chapel of Powersville United Methodist Church. After the service, a reception will be held in the fellowship hall, where the family will greet friends.

The family will accept flowers, but prefer donations be made to the Sandy Lansford Smith Memorial Fund payable to the Garden Club of Georgia for the new Children's Park at the Botanical Gardens on the University of Georgia Campus. Mail checks to Brenda Griner, Treasurer, 244 Satilla Drive, Brunswick, GA 31523.
