On the morning of Wednesday, June 29, 2022, our wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Sarah Edna DeFoor, left this world holding the hand of God. She was 92 years old.
Sarah was born and raised in Gordon County, GA on October 10, 1929, the daughter of the late John Wilson Cagle and Elsie Bagwell Cagle. She attended Oostanaula High School until she met, fell in love with, and eloped with her beloved husband, R.C. DeFoor. The couple quickly started a large family of seven children and reared them in a house of love and the Lord. Sarah, R.C. and the children relocated to Macon in 1957 and then to Centerville the following year. For most of her adult life, she was a homemaker tending to her husband, house and children, but she also enjoyed working in the cafeteria at Centerville Elementary and delivering flowers for Nancy’s Flower Shop. Additionally, Sarah supported R.C. with his car club and his business, DeFoor Acoustical, later known as DeFoor Drywall. She even worked cleaning the office for a time. She was always willing to help out wherever she was needed in whichever capacity it might be.
R.C. and Sarah were charter members of Westside Baptist Church where they served for many years. There, Sarah participated in the Women’s Ministry Union (WMU) and absolutely loved singing in the choir. In later years, she became a member of First Baptist Church of Centerville. Sarah had a beautiful garden that she enjoyed tending to and was an excellent cook, as well.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Saralyn DeFoor; her grandson, Bradley DeFoor; siblings, Henry, James, Bud, Lucille, Clara, Nell and Shelby; and sons-in-law, Mack Martin and Tim Musselwhite.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving children, Charlotte Lockhart (Sonny), Debbie Martin, Sharon Musselwhite, D. Jay DeFoor (Terri), Bebe Mackey (Calvin) and T.W. DeFoor (Susan); grandchildren, Kristen Boys (Rob), Brandon Lockhart (Kristy), Britton Lockhart (Kim), Jenae Martin Griffin, Mitchell Martin (Cherie), Amanda Musselwhite Hayes (Johnny), Shay Musselwhite Blanton (Eric), Shelley DeFoor Franks (Matt), Clayton DeFoor (Cathy), Dana Mackey, Sarah Mackey Stout (Tyler), Briggs DeFoor (Mary Martha) and Madison DeFoor Brashear (Colby); great-grandchildren, Mary Cagle Lockhart, Nate and Caz Lockhart, Hudson and Evangeline Boys, Quinn, Payton and Olivia Lockhart, Hollis, Harper and Hatcher Griffin, Bailey Martin, Gracie, Aiden, Elle and Clara Hayes, Brandon Blanton, Garrett and Allie Blanton and Davis DeFoor; sister, Gladys Cagle Woodring; sister-in-law, Ethel Fortner Chatham; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 5, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Centerville. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Centerville. After the service, Sarah will be laid to rest next to R.C. in Centerville Cemetery.
