Sheena Shumate, 77, of Warner Robins passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021. She was born in Sunderland, County Durham, England to the late Tully and Freda Gallagher. She moved to the U.S. in 1966 and obtained her United States citizenship. Sheena was an elementary school teacher for over thirty years and retired from the Houston County School System. She continued her friendships with co-workers and met regularly with the Ya Ya Sisterhood, a core group of retired teachers. Sheena and her daughter enjoyed a beautiful friendship and much quality time together over the years and her presence will be terribly missed. She had a laugh that was contagious, enjoyed rose gardening, created beautiful knit designs, loved to travel, and enjoyed exploring new places and meeting new people. She was a member of The Daughters of the British Empire (DBE), a charitable organization and American society of women of British ancestry. Sheena was also a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Shumate.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Anna Cheney of Warner Robins; one brother, Terry Gallagher (Patti) of Weybridge, Surrey, England; nieces, Sasha, Brigitte, Charlotte, and Fiona; and stepsons, Jason Shumate of Atlanta and Steven Shumate (Karren) of Tampa.
At the family’s request, all services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Sheena Shumate to the charity of the donor’s choice.
