Sherry Frances Martin Floyd, age 55, went home to her heavenly Father on December 31, 2007 after a brief battle with cancer.
Sherry was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She moved to the middle Georgia area, making it her home, in 1979.
Sherry attended college in Atlanta and in northern Alabama and took many courses of interest through the years. Her passion for knowledge and love of people led her to begin her own business, Retirement Benefits Service Agency, where she was sole proprietor from 1983 until 1996 when she was forced to medically retire with systemic lupus. Her favorite part of her business was teaching seminars to large groups such as the National League of Postmasters (Denver, Colorado and Dallas, Texas) and others.
Children were Sherry's #1 love. At one time she had five children under the age of five. These included two foster children and three children still in diapers. Further demonstrating her love of and commitment to children, she began three non-denominational Bible Clubs for children over the years and taught Sunday School, children's church, and Vacation Bible School as well.
Throughout her life, Sherry has been active in a number of churches, beginning with Morgan Falls Baptist and the First Baptist Church of Sandy Springs (both in the Atlanta area). Most recently, Sherry attended Westview Baptist Church in Hawkinsville.
Sherry is preceded in death by two of her sons -- infant Joshua Adam Floyd (1974), and Micah Allen Floyd (2003).
Sherry is survived by her loving parents, Frances and Landrum Thomas ("L.T.") Martin of Sandy Springs, Georgia. Other family members who will deeply miss Sherry include her three surviving children and their families: a devoted son, Jeremiah Jonathan Floyd and his daughter, Emily (Kelly and Edgard); a beautiful daughter, Michelle Floyd Powell (Rodney) and her son, Jason; and a beautiful daughter, Ashley Michelle Floyd.
Two surviving brothers and their families will deeply miss sister Sherry as
well: Tom Martin (Nancy) of Sugar Hill, Georgia, and Dr. Charles Martin (Marilyn, Brandon, Julie) of Derby, Kansas. In addition, Sherry was blessed with an extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives too numerous to list.
Further, Sherry was abundantly blessed by many precious friends that she considered "more valuable than silver and gold." Several of them have been there for Sherry since her "fight for life" began.
To honor her life, a memorial service for Sherry will be held on Friday, January 4, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins. Along with family members and friends, Quinn Hammock of Lizella, Georgia will speak at the service. Friends are encouraged to meet the family at the funeral home prior to the memorial service, beginning at 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that friends support Emory University's Winship Cancer Institute: Development Office, 1762 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA 30322.
