On the evening of Tuesday, November 28, 2017, Ray Akers, 88, passed away surrounded by his beloved family.
Ray was born on April 30, 1929 in Leslie, West Virginia to the late John Quincy and Emma Chrisman Akers. A proud Air Force veteran, he served for 28 years including time during the Vietnam and Korean Wars. Later, Ray worked in civil service at Robins Air Force Base in aircraft maintenance and was an avid card player. Ray was a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars where he was the Entertainment Director. He was a tough man except when it came to his beloved family.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cora Akers, grandson, Dylan Akers, 2 brothers, and 1 sister.
His memory will forever be treasured by his son, Mark Akers of Kathleen; daughters, Jayme Bethea of Warner Robins, Terry Fiore (Pete) of Warner Robins, Kelly Akers (Joe Hollenberg) of Fairfax, Virginia; grandchildren, Austin Bethea, Cara Fiore, Jay Fiore (Debra), Eva Hamlin (Cody), Erica Morales (Ivan); great-grandchildren, Charlotte Hamlin, Savannah Hamlin, and sister, Martha Tilley of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 30, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017 in Andersonville National Cemetery where Ray will be laid to rest with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be given in memory of Ray Luther Akers to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), 1011 Corder Road, Warner Robins, GA 31088.
