Sonja Turner-Allen was born on February 9, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, to Sue Willa and DeArmon Clayton Sr. She entered into Holy Matrimony to her loving and devoted husband, Paul Ladd Allen on May 5, 2011. Her parents and loving husband preceded her in death. Sonja was the third born of seven children; DeArmon Clayton Jr., Jacqueline Hill, twin brother - Ronald, Portia Evans, Darnella (Lamont) Armstead and Lanier Clayton. She is preceded in death by her brother, DeArmon Clayton Jr., her sister, Jacqueline Hill and her twin brother - Ronald Clayton.
Sonja accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. She attended Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois, where she was an elder in the church and served on the Emmaus Road Ministry. She graduated from DuSable High School in Chicago, Illinois, and attended Wilson Junior College for a short while when she started her career with Illinois Bell Telephone Company.
She retired from her professional career to pursue a career in a lifelong ministry of caring. She had a calling and a gift to care for the sick and shut-in. Her ministry was not only caring for family, but friends and friends of friends. She knew no strangers. She had a gift for talking to whoever she met and consoled those in need no matter what the circumstance.
Sonja loved to travel and never missed an opportunity whenever she could whether it was domestically or internationally. She loved meeting new people and learning about other cultures. Her travels took her to places throughout the United States as well as places like China, Europe and the Caribbean.
She is survived by her brother: Lanier Clayton, sisters: Portia Evans, Darnella (Lamont) Armstead, children: Mark (Patti) Hudson, Lamont Hudson, grandchildren: Candace (Mitchell) Medland, Tiesha (Timothy) Westbrooks, Tanika McAffee, Marissa Hudson, Lanae Hudson, Mariah Hudson, Kalyn Hudson, Lamont Hudson, Brianna Hudson, Amber Hudson, Isabella Hudson, Aaron Hudson, Mark Hudson Jr., 7 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
A memorial gathering with Sonja’s family will be Friday, April 9, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. The memorial service celebrating her life will immediately follow at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with Reverend Matt Hudson officiating. For friends and family unable to attend, the service will be streamed live via the McCullough Funeral Home Facebook page at www.facebook.com/mcculloughfuneralhome/live/.
