Truman Lee Selmon passed away July 31, 2009 at the Summerville Nursing Home in Perry, Georgia. He was the son of Travis and Thelma Cleo (Garland) Selmon. John, a civic leader and businessman, was born August 2, 1930, in Slaton, Texas, and grew up in Sweetwater, Texas. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret Selmon, Bonaire; sons, Don (Carla) Selmon, Gibb Selmon, and Frost (Dena) Selmon, all of Missouri; daughters, Aleta (Philip) Casady, Missouri, and Tami (Tommy) Wood, Bonaire, brother, Fred Selmon; sisters, Billy Francis, Clara Jean, Nelda Sue and Wilma Ruth; grandchildren, Aaron Casady, Logan Selmon, Leslie Young, Abbie McMullen, Dikena Adair, Allison Selmon, Ashlee James, Asa Wood, Ible Wood; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

After his graduation from Newman High School of Sweetwarer in 1947, John worked on a railway line crew for six years. He perceived a future in communications and began his successful career at the South Central Telephone Association in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, in 1955. From 1960 to1976, he was General Manager of the Chariton Valley Telephone Corporation in Bucklin, Missouri. During this time, John received the Management Achievement Award and was elected to the National Telephone Cooperative Association (NTCA) Board of Directors. He served as NTCA Region VIII Director and was eventually elected Vice President of the NTCA board. Following twelve years of service, he was President-Elect when he resigned to become an employee of the association. He subsequently moved to Washington, D.C., where he developed and presented seminars to NTCA members. Finally, John returned to the private co-op sector in 1983, as General Manager of the Ringgold Telephone Company; in 1986, he was promoted to Executive Vice President, a position he held until his retirement in 2000, the culmination of a career spanning five decades.

Mr. Selmon always pursued a course of education, including practical telephony courses, International Correspondence Schools Center for Degree Studies, Kansas University management courses, International Accountants Society, American Management Association Center for Continuing Education, New York City; Michigan State University and Xerox Learning Systems Sales Courses, Computer-Aided Financial Management for the School of Engineering at the University of Virginia, and United States Telephone Association Courses. He also attended numerous national professional workshops and seminars through the years, speaking at many of them. He served on the board of Directors of the NTCA, the Missouri Telephone Association, the Georgia Telephone Association, the Separations and Settlements Subcommittee on Technical Operations, the Walker Technical Institute of Georgia, the Utility Protection Center of Georgia, and the United States Independent Telephone Association.

Visitation will be Sunday, August 2, 2009, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2009, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2009, at the Alta Vista Mausoleum, in Gainesville, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association, 277 Martin Luther King Boulevard, Suite 201, Macon GA 31201, or to the donor's favorite charity.
