Velara Powell Cassel, 71, died on Tuesday, November 11, 2003, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 14, at Second Baptist Church with interment following in Magnolia Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home.
Mrs. Cassel was born in Cordele on February 28, 1932. She was a homemaker, but prior to October 1969, she worked at Houston Medical Center and Robins Air Force Base.
A Christian of the Baptist faith, Mrs. Cassel was a longtime member of Second Baptist Church in Warner Robins. She taught Sunday School for more than 20 years and had enjoyed substitute teaching in Sunday School for the past 12 years. She was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore R. Cassel; parents, C. Cullie Powell, Sr., and Dora Brady Powell; brothers, James Powell, Willie Powell, and Melvin Powell; and granddaughter, Sherri Melissa Black-Carter.
Survivors include her children, Kimberly Cassel Pritchett of Warner Robins and Ronnie Black of Bonaire; sisters, Grace Whitman of Cordele, Julia Faye Edge of Cordele, and Elizabeth Mann of Byron; brother, C. Cullie Powell, Jr., of Fort Myers, Fla.; and granddaughters, Gillian Leighann Pritchett of Warner Robins and Nicki Walker of Pooler. She has two great-grandchildren.
