With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and sister, Virginia Evelyn Bennett. She peacefully entered into rest on the morning of Saturday, December 24, 2022, while at home. Virginia is reunited with her beloved husband, Dessaw Bennett, her sons, Dessaw Eugene Bennett and John Timothy Bennett, her parents, William Alvis and Ada Syrock Prestwood, and her siblings, William Alvis Prestwood, Sylvia Moen and Rayford Prestwood.
Virginia was born in Dekalb County, AL on August 10, 1930, and grew up on a farm in Mentone, AL where she was homeschooled. At the age of 16, she got the opportunity of a lifetime as she was called to work for a cotton mill in Macon. Virginia was beside herself when her first paycheck came in; she couldn’t believe she made all that money! While in Macon, she met her husband, Dessaw, who became the love of her life, while at a square dance. Not long after, the two were married and Virginia made the choice to devote herself to serving full-time as a wife, mother, and homemaker for the family she loved so dearly.
Patient, forgiving and a woman strong in her Christian faith, Virginia read the Bible daily and had a close relationship with the Lord. Additionally, she enjoyed gardening and tending to her backyard vegetable garden, sewing her own outfits and cooking new recipes she learned about on T.V. Taste testers of the new food were not limited to her family members, but were shared with friends, neighbors, and even the animals. Virginia was an avid reader and faithful subscriber to the Macon Telegraph, which is where she kept up with current events and politics. With all of her hobbies and interests, spending time with her family was what brought her the most happiness.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving children, Duard William Bennett, Evelyn Ann Bennett, Julia Irene Bennett, and Donna Beth Bennett, all of Fort Valley; granddaughter, Kaylynn Watson of Lizella; daughter-in-law, Aldena Bennett of Lizella; and sister, Helen Phillips (Don) of Mentone, AL.
Visitation with Virginia’s family will take place on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with Rev. Marty Watson officiating.
Memorial donations may be given in memory of Virginia to Happy Hour Service Center, 202 N. Davis Drive, Warner Robins, GA 31093.
