Walter Woodrow Palmer, 93, entered into rest on Monday, July 6, 2009.
Born on January 5, 1916, in Broxton, Coffee County, to John Lewis Palmer and Ludie Margaret Knowles Palmer, he was orphaned during a flu epidemic at the age of three. He was raised by aunt and uncle, Wiley Byrd and Bettie Knowles Byrd of Jeff Davis County. At age eleven, he left home to attend the Martha Berry School for Boys in Rome, Georgia. On graduation from Berry School in 1934, he went on to attend North Georgia Military College in Dahlonega. He subsequently moved to Savannah where he met his wife, Evelyn Jean Butler Palmer. During World War II, Mr. Palmer built Liberty Ships. He later relocated to Warner Robins to work as a packaging engineer at Robins Air Force Base, traveling extensively abroad in support of his position. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Emeritus member of Acacia Lodge in Savannah. He was past Worthy Patron of Palestine Chapter 245 of Savannah. Mr. Palmer was a member of Central Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School. He enjoyed carpentry, masonry, and gardening. He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Butler Palmer; siblings, Lena Mae Palmer Anderson, George Lewis Palmer, John Lewis Palmer, Jr., Mary Margaret Palmer Faria, Hugh Knowles Palmer and Carl Jenkins Palmer; and half siblings, Letta Estelle Palmer Davis and Curtis Lee Palmer.
His memory will forever be treasured by his son and daughter-in-law, Cecil Ray Palmer and Virginia Smith Palmer, Warner Robins; granddaughters, Anne Dunstan Palmer Johnson and Lisa Butler Palmer Thomas, both of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Charles Roland Johnson, Matilda Elizabeth Johnson and Dashiell Rey Thomas, Atlanta.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 8, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. in McCullough Funeral Home Chapel, the Reverend Sidney Odom officiating. A graveside service will held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009 in Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery in Savannah.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Heart of Georgia Hospice, 103 Westridge Drive, Warner Robins GA 31088 or to the Children's Masonic Home, 1417 Nottingham Drive, Macon GA 31211-1319.
