Weyman Eugene Bond

On February 12th, 2023, the world lost a substantial man as he slipped from this world into eternal life. Weyman Eugene Bond was a large man, in stature, presence, and service. When Gene Bond was around you always knew it. With fortitude and strength, he served his country as a marine in Vietnam. While on his third tour, he sacrificed a hand to defend the other men in his unit. He continued his service to his country as a Civil Service employee at Robins Air Force Base for thirty-seven years until his retirement in 2011.

After returning home from Vietnam, Weyman was a presence to his long-time sweetheart, Aida Roldan, as they married in July of 1969. The strength of his loyalty, faithfulness, and service to family, was evident in the longevity of a fifty-three year marriage and his ever-present devotion to his two sons. He loved his family, all of his family, and the nature of their relation was not a measure of the amount of his love and concern for them.

Weyman’s presence can also be seen in his passion for the formation of the lives of the youth in the community. He had been a teacher of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine at Sacred Heart Parish where he taught children about God and faith. He was also a Scoutmaster and mentor in the Boy Scouts of America where he guided and encouraged many young men through their journey to becoming Eagle Scout Award recipients.

His presence in his faith was grand in scale, and this was evident to his parish, Sacred Heart, through his continued activity as a Sir Knight in the Knights of Columbus, as a sound shepherd for Mass, and in his alms giving for the needy in the community. He was a forgiving and understanding man, as well as, always being apologetic and repentant when he found himself to be in error.

It can be said that to know Weyman was to love him. His larger than life presence will be greatly missed, but his love for his God, family, friends and country will live on through his family.

Weyman is survived by his wife, Aida Bond of Warner Robins, GA; his sons, Jason Adam Bond (Cindi) of Warner Robins, GA and Justin Eric Bond (Katie) of Charleston, SC; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister, Debra Bond Powers of Columbus, GA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twelve siblings.

A Rosary will be at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2023, at McCullough Funeral Home, with visitation following until 8:00 p.m. A second visitation will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, February 18, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the church at 11:00 a.m., immediately following visitation, with Monsignor Fred Nijem and Deacon Jim Hunt officiating. Weyman will be laid to rest in Park Hill Cemetery, Columbus, at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon.
