Wilbur Clyde Griffin

December 7, 1935 — December 8, 2003

Wilbur Clyde Griffin, age 68, of 200 Howard Street, Byron, GA, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, December 8, 2003, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday at Peachtree Baptist Church, Highway 247 Connector, Byron, with burial to follow at Glen Haven Cemetery in south Bibb County. The Reverends Sam Waldron and Jay Lauritsen will officiate. The family will meet friends and loved ones from 6:00 until 8:00 pm, Wednesday evening at McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins. Flowers are appreciated, but those so desiring may either contribute to the Peachtree Baptist Church Building Fund or to Hospice of Houston County.

Wilbur was the son of the late Ira Bradford Griffin, Sr. and Clyde Mae Bankston Griffin of Houston County. His mother died at Wilbur’s birth and he was nurtured by Clyde’s sister, Emma Bankston Smoot, who later became Emma Bankston Griffin, or simply, Mother. Wilbur was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather and caring brother. He was a 1953 graduate of the Byron High School. Shortly thereafter, upon the untimely death of his father who held the position before him, Wilbur became the foreman of K&B Fruit Farm, later known as Kewanee Farm, of Byron. After that farm was sold, Wilbur worked at the Blue Bird Wanderlodge plant in Ft. Valley and subsequently at the Northrup Grumman plant in Perry, from which he retired in 1997.

On Christmas Day, 1955, Wilbur married his true love, the former Miriam Margaret Hudson. Miriam was by his side in their home in Byron, when he departed this world. Wilbur was known to many in the Byron community for the produce he gladly shared from his garden and from his pampered peach trees. Wilbur will be remembered for his Christian faith and walk, his quick smile, his distinctive laugh and his well-worn straw hats. Wilbur and Miriam enjoyed farming and tending their cattle on the Hudson Place farm in south Bibb County. This farm has been in Miriam’s family for over a hundred years. Wilbur was a hard worker and always willing to assist a neighbor in need. He loved to hear and to tell a funny story. Wilbur was an active and faithful member and deacon of Peachtree Baptist Church.

Wilbur is survived by his beloved wife, Miriam Griffin; three sons, Robert Griffin and his wife, Liza, of Canton, GA, David Griffin, and his wife, Joanne, of Macon, GA, and Phillip Griffin, and his wife, Rita, of Panama City Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Meghan and Lauren Griffin of Canton, GA and Josh and Tyler Griffin of Macon; one sister, Carrie Meeks of Macon; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The family may be contacted at the residence. Go to www.mcculloughfh.com to sign the Online Registry for the family. McCullough Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
