William Ray Loyd, 93, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at the Jamestown Personal Care Home in Fort Valley, Georgia. Mr. Loyd was born in Mansfield, Georgia, in Newton County. He attended public school and graduated from Covington High School in 1944. He served in the United States Navy from September of 1944 until March of 1946, having seen active duty at the Great Lakes Training Center in Illinois, Port Hueneme in California, and in Okinawa, Japan. After completion of his military service, Mr. Loyd completed Draughon School of Commerce in Atlanta, Georgia. He was employed with Central Georgia Railway in a number of capacities including as the traveling passenger agent in Macon, Georgia, and division passenger agent in Savannah, Georgia. He also worked in the freight traffic office of the St. Louis - San Francisco Railway in Savannah and Macon. Then, he spent 30 years in civil service with the Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex (WRALC) at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, from 1955 until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Loyd occupied several positions and received numerous awards; he retired as Branch Chief. Afterwards, he served six years as project manager for the Leon Seigler Management Service Division, a government contractor for Robins Air Force Base.
Mr. Loyd was the son of the late William Marvin Loyd and Eunice Crenshaw Loyd, both of Covington, Georgia. Also preceding him in death were his wife, Helen E. Loyd; children, Linda McCullough and David E. Loyd; and siblings, James Leo Loyd, Carolyn Herrin, and Evelyn Allen.
Mr. Loyd is survived by his grandson, Corry Phillips (Melissa Norton); great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Phillips (Timothy Austin); and Joshua Phillips; great-great-grandchildren, Antonio and Alyssa Moreno, and Grayson Austin.
A graveside service will take place at Georgia Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville, Georgia, on Friday, February 28, 2020 at 1:00 p.m.
