God called for his child, Mrs. Wilma Allene "Polly" Smith, 91, to come home on Monday, June 29, 2009.
Mrs. Smith was born in DeQueen, Arkansas, on June 1, 1918, to the late Jim and Mertie Dennis Snapp. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-four years, the Reverend Hal C. Smith, Bristol, Tennessee; and her son-in-law, Edward Kutzner, Souderton, Pennsylvania.
She spent her formative years in Sullivan County, Tennessee, residing in Blountville and Bristol following her marriage at the age of fifteen. She was a fixture for over twenty-three years in the Children's Department of the Parks–Belk store in Bristol, Virginia, but she was a full-time mother, grandmother, and great grandmother until her death. Her love and support for her family were unsurpassed, but her kindness and passion for all was her legacy. She served unselfishly with her husband while ministering to several rural churches and communities in the Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee region for over fifty years. They were the founders of the Union Hope Bible Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Virginia, where she maintained her church membership until her death. In addition to her untiring church work, she served her community faithfully through volunteer work with organizations such as the Haven of Rest Rescue Mission, her Church's Food Pantry, and the area's Meals on Wheels Program, which she served until the age of eighty-four.
Mrs. Smith moved to Bonaire, Georgia, in 2002 where she remained active. Her favorite activities were gardening, sewing, shopping, reading, aerobics, participating in her Ladies Bible Study Group, her unwavering Friday morning hair appointment, visiting with her neighborhood friends and appreciating the special affection of the Magnolia Guild. She worshipped at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Warner Robins.
She is survived by her three most grateful children, Gladys Pullon (Marlin), Blountville, Tennessee, Jo Ann Kutzner, Souderton, Pennsylvania, and Major General Ron Smith (Debbie), USAF (Ret.), Warner Robins, Georgia; grandchildren, Marlene (Gary), Michael, Karl, Scott, Rick (Christy) and Wendi (Matt); step-granddaughters, Robin (Beau) and Alison (Kenny); great- grandchildren, Richard, David, John, Paige, Madison, Emilee and Abigail Allene; step-great grandsons, Ethan, Brady and Cole; and half-brothers, Billy Snapp and Joe Snapp, Blountville, Tennessee.
A wife, mother, mother-in law, grandmother, great grandmother, dear friend, one of God's children and in the eyes of all, a true "saint". Her smile, charm, and kindness were shared with those who knew her or just simply came in contact with her. She was one of those people who made you feel better by just being in her presence. Heaven warmly surely welcomed her home with open arms.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 2, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 3, 2009, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home, Reverend Robert Jarrett officiating. A chapel service will also be held at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home in Bristol, Tennessee, with burial to take place in Blountville City Cemetery, in Blountville, Tennessee. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be considered in her name to the American Cancer Society or the Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions, P.O. Box 1346, Blue Bell PA 19422.
